Nestled by the side of the road above Oxenholme station, the aptly named Station Inn proved a perfect place for a quick bite to eat on a crisp Thursday.

I was greeted by a friendly and relaxing atmosphere as the radio played and I settled in a sunny spot by the window.

I was delighted to find a special ‘winter warmer’ lunch menu, offering a delicious choice of light meals sure to hit the right spot.

Fresh baguettes such as steak and caramelised onion or roast beef and horseradish were £5.95 – or £6.95 for meals such as chicken casserole and roast potatoes or Cumbrian sausage toad-in-the-hole.

There is also a varied selection of main courses using locally sourced produce where possible including chef’s own creamy lasagne, Plumgarths Cumberland Sausage with spiced apple sauce and golden battered Irish Sea haddock. All come at a fair price with the option to have some as a smaller portion.

Still grasping on to the last threads of Christmas, I opted for a festive brie, bacon and cranberry sauce wholemeal baguette from the winter warmer menu with a side of coleslaw for an extra £1.

I was served quickly with a lovely smile from the attentive staff and was soon tucking into coleslaw just the way I like it - rich and creamy - and a baguette that oozed with cheese.

My meal was perfectly rounded off with a latte - after all, I still had an afternoon of work to do.
